Hi all

Bought a warrior 165 recently and it came with two complete

downrigger setups, bloke used these for bassing off swansea area.

Just got some new cable as found there was only 60ft on each.

Firstly i was thinking of using them this sunday if i do get out

trying to hook a shark! Does anyone use these when anchored or

drift fishing or should they just be used when trolling? I was thinking

of using both with big baits at different depths after a shark! Would they

get tangled fishing two? (would be spread about 9/10 feet apart.

Cheers mike

Anchored, drifting, trolling.

I've no idea why we don't use them more in the UK as they can be a deadly way of presenting baits on either light tackle or just more naturally.

SLLllllllooooooowwwww trolling a Mackerel Livebait in a known shark area would be my choice.

One at close to the bottom and one just beneath Gannet diving depth.

Your idea of a nice big bloody bait at the exact depth you want WILL work, but remember if drifting (or anchored) your chum slick will run off downtide in a cone shape as it drifts through the water column. What this means (and all rules are made to be broken is that the shark will come from downtide and usually rise up through the water column as they approach the boat and may be seen in the slick on the surface right by the boat.

The usual pattern will be to have the bait furthest away from the boat set as deep as you can get it (you'll need a fair bit of lead if anchoring) and then gradually shallow the baits up as they get closer and closer.

One bait literally hung in the water the length of the trace right next to the boat with the drag of the reel IN GEAR on this particular set up. Call it "self hooking" or a "bolt rig". You may be surprised how many times it is this set up that get's the final hook up after a few "tick tick ticks" of line from the reels further away. It simply needs the shark to get bolder and bolder and eventually get so excited it can't resist that last juicy mackerel it finds right where the chum slick is smelliest and strongest.

JIM

you can come and try mine! i'm sure it would be easier with a crew member to help

set up etc.

was looking at playing at sharking sunday but may just go

trolling after bass instead! (needles area i think!)

That's Jolly good of you Mike.

I've just asked Adam for a space on JV. I would like to do that if he still has a space.

I would like to come and try your riggers though. I'll share expenses etc. as always.

Cheers.

OK Jim

Some other time sunday fortnight maybe!

Ain't got crew for sunday so might have to go sharking alone!

To quote the film, Jaws - - - - - " We're gonna need a bigger boat "

You'd better hope you only hook a " Little un " then. biggrin.gif

If I hooked something bigger than my Warrior, I would get through a lot of toilet paper. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I would like to give the down riggers a go though.

Cheers Mike.
