Trust backs Sussex netting and trawling bylaws

w660_1195130_kelpforestx550.jpg

The Sussex Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authority have put forward new bylaws for netting and trawling along the Sussex coast. The proposals include excluding trawling out to 4km in order to allow kelp beds off the coast of Littlehampton to recover. The Angling Trust will be responding to the bylaws and we are encouraging our members and clubs to do the same.

Angling Trust representatives met former fisheries minister Richard Benyon last month to discuss the proposal for Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) around the UK and their impact on sea angling. Mr Benyon is chairing a panel of experts looking into what HPMAs would contribute to the UK’s marine protection. Chris Holloway, chairman of Angling Trust Wyvern; Peter Vanallen, deputy chairman; Phill Higgins, chairman of the Professional Boatman's Association; and Angling Trust director Tim Macpherson were among those attending the meeting.
