Recreational anglers play a key part in the way our marine resources are managed, but what are the characteristics of the average angler and do anglers differ? This is an important question! Understanding how anglers may differ in their beliefs, attitudes and behaviours can help to understand how recreational angling can be best integrated into the future management of our seas and oceans.

Adam Fisher, a postgraduate researcher at the Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) at the University of Gloucestershire is carrying out a programme of work exploring diversity among recreational sea anglers in England and Wales to inform the future of UK fisheries management. A key part of the research involves engaging with anglers through an online survey to gather important information that can help classify different types of angler. In support of this work, we invite recreational sea anglers to take part in this research and complete the survey by clicking the button below. This is a real opportunity to take part in research that will be shared with policymakers, therefore informing the future of angling policy!

In return for taking part in the online survey, which will take about 10-15 minutes, you will have the opportunity to win £100 in vouchers for an angling store of your choice. Please complete the survey by Friday 18th March 2022

Angling Trust Sea Angling

Regional Voluntary Group (RVG)

580xunlimited___petegodfreyvnov8ig7h4uns

On Wednesday 19th January 2022 the group met for the second time and is building its membership with all but the North-West of England currently represented. It has now agreed terms of reference ensuring focus upon the needs of the RSA community in the coming years.

During the meeting, building upon competition and participation development was keenly supported. The value that angling has offered in supporting mental health issues was also identified and seen as something the group can continue to build upon. At this time of the year angler welfare when fishing from isolated and rocky marks was also recognised and seen as part of wider health and safety issues the group can develop.

Short presentations were detailed on funding achieved already by the Angling Trust from the MMO Fisheries and Seafood Scheme, namely rolling out 50 line recycling bins around the English coastline. This funding will hopefully be the first such opportunity delivered following the recognition of RSA as a key stakeholder in the Fisheries Act 2020. It is hoped the group will provide the opportunity to bring RSAs together and to maximise opportunities to obtain funding over the coming years to support sea angling generally.

If you would like your club to be considered in the roll out of the line recycling bins or on angling litter in the marine environment generally please contact Tom Humphreys at the Angling Trust via his email address: tom.humphreys@anglingtrust.net

Anglers for Ukraine appeal gets off to a flying start

In response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the Angling Trust has set up a fundraising initiative for those in the British angling community who wish to help.

Anglers for Ukraine was launched at The Big One fishing show in Farnborough at the weekend with anglers contributing to a bucket collection. One generous exhibitor, fishing brand and retailer OUTLAW PRO, donated all takings from their stand, totalling around £10,000, to the appeal giving it a flying start.
