A while ago I sent a letter to my local MP regarding the Marine Charter, thought others might be interested in the response:

Thank you for your recent email regarding the Marine Charter.

You will be pleased to know that I have signed the Marine Charter and am fully committed to the creation of an ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas. I was delighted to have Dorset included in the original list of marine conservation zones, but like you, I agree that more needs to be done regarding the issue.

This week during DEFRA Oral Question Time in the House of Commons, I questioned Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, George Eustice MP on the Marine Charter. Please see the question and answer below:

Annette Brooke (Mid Dorset and North Poole) (LD):

What recent representations she has received on the marine charter and marine protected areas.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (George Eustice):

We regularly receive correspondence about marine protected areas, including on the marine charter put forward by Link. I will be attending the marine charter parliamentary reception on 19 November.

Annette Brooke:

As we approach the fifth anniversary of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, let me say how pleased I am that Dorset was included in the original 27 marine conservation zones. However, does the Minister agree that there is a long way to go before we can achieve a full network of marine protected areas by 2016, as set out in the Act, and can he say what level of commitment the Government are giving to achieve those important objectives?

George Eustice:

Earlier this year we announced 37 candidate sites for the second tranche of marine conservation zones and we intend to publish a consultation on the second tranche in the New Year. It is our intention to have a third tranche in 2016, so the work to take forward additional marine conservation zones is well under way.

I hope you find these informative.

Thank you again for your email. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch again on this or any other issue.

Yours sincerely,

Annette Brooke MP
