Conservation Officer Report- February 2014

The weather has once again been doing its bit for the conservation of fish stocks, by not letting anyone out to fish.  It’s been pretty rough around our coasts though- so we’ll have to see what our underwater and inshore features look like once these low pressures finally stop rolling in.  One thing which has come to the fore is, once again, plastics pollution. Tons of plastic waste of all sizes has been washed up on our beaches and there have been a number of work-parties formed to collect what they can.  Maybe consider joining in with one!

Disclaimer: Apologies if I’ve doubled up on any stories/articles. No prizes for spotting if I have!

“Many of the stories and information that I pass on comes from various ‘channels’ on the internet.  I use Twitter, Facebook, several news sites and have signed up for a few email distribution lists.

To see who I am following on Twitter, look me up at @charlieannear”

Some of this year’s hot topics (in no particular order):

  • EU Legislation and subsidies
  • Marine Plastic Pollution
  • Go Australia! Western Australia Shark cull and dumping dredging sediment on the Great Barrier Reef.

Angling Trust (http://www.anglingtrust.net/):

- Sea Angling 2012 Comes to Shoreham

There was plenty of discussion at the Sussex Marine Division meeting earlier this month in Shoreham about Cefas' Angling 2012 Survey. The focus was on totals given for recreational vs commercial catches for bass and cod. Questions were also put to Sussex IFCA about how close pair trawlers come to the beaches. You can download the results of the Angling 2012 Survey from our Sussex Marine Division's website.

- Government Go ahead for New Cormorant and Goosander Management Plan. http://www.anglingtrust.net/news.asp?itemid=1976&itemTitle=Government+gives+go+ahead+for+New+Cormorant+and+Goosander+Management+Plan&section=29&sectionTitle=Angling+Trust+News I know there will be a lot of freshwater anglers in the club who think this is great. But my question is why are Cormorants going inland for food? I would suggest that a major factor is that they can’t get enough fish as easily in their proper natural habitat i.e. the sea.  Angling Trust could use this for the benefit of Sea Angling, but aren’t doing so.

- Wessex AT have challenged an AT competition which does not allow catch and release. A member of the Wessex AT Committee has resigned due to this anti-conservation stance by the AT. Email sent to David Mitchell as follows: (response awaited.)

Good afternoon David,

It has been brought to the notice of the Wessex that the Angling Trust is now using ISAC's (Individual Sea Angling Club's), as a platform for the AT's National Fishing League points (Announced on WSF by Mr Trevor Sutch).

These matches are not catch and release or measure and return and as such they are condoning the slaughter of unwanted fish to receive some Angling Trust points.

Surely the ethos of the Trust is the conservation of fish stocks and the welfare of the fish that are caught - this appears to be the direct opposite.

Trevor Sutch resigned his position on the AT Wessex Region Committee because he wouldn't uphold the Conservation stance as applied by our Region and the Angling Trust.

Information relating to this issue can be found at http://www.worldseafishing.com/

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards

Richard Prosser

Secretary AT Wessex Region Marine
