MINIMUM LANDING SIZE CONSULTATION

Hi Guys

The Southern IFCA are currently reviewing their Byelaws. They have decided to include in this process a public consultation on certain byelaws, INCLUDING MINIMUM LANDING SIZES. The Byelaw Working Group minutes specifically mention mullet and skates and rays, but the consultatation will be open to comments about all species. If we want to see minimum landing sizes increased so that all fish get at least one chance to breed before they can be taken (as the SIFCA say they want - see their piece in the Poole Harbour Guide, and as the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive says they should be) then please go along to the workshops and say what you want. You won't need to stand up in public or anything like that. Please also circulate this note (from the S.IFCA, below) around as many people/clubs etc as possible. The bigger the turnout, the more chance we have of getting some improvements.

Thanks

Nigel H

At Junes Club meeting I advised the members present about this oppertunity for EVERYONE as a stakeholder to have your say at these consultation meetings.

Please find dates below for the stake holder consultation Workshops venues and dates.

Some ideas such as a minimum distance from the shore for static gear such as gill, trammel nets and pots.

Background

At present it is legal for commercial fishing to put nets as close to the shore as they, like or even non commercial netting if they say the fish are for personal consumption. There are no legal requirements to set a net a minimum distance from the shore they can even be set from the shore.

what do you think ?

Do you think that the minimum size for Bass or any other fish need to change ?

Do you think that pump scoop dredges and any other such as Scallop or Oyster Dredges cause damage to the habitats in estuarine environments.
