READ MORE Angling Trust respond to UK Seafood Fund enquiry Under the Fisheries Act (2020), recreational sea anglers are a recognised stakeholder within UK fisheries management and, where possible, can access funds designated to the industry. The Angling Trust believes the UK Seafood Fund does not currently meet the needs of the recreational angling sector and that it upholds unnecessary barriers to the sector applying for funds which are disadvantageous and unequal. READ MORE Have your voice heard - join the local Regional Fisheries Group Are you aware that the Marine Management Organisation and Defra are running Regional Fisheries Groups and that you can attend ‘in person’ or ‘virtually’? The Angling Trust encourages all anglers to take part to ensure our views are heard. These meetings will occur regularly, and we will publish dates whenever we are advised about them. GET INVOLVED VIRTUAL SEA ANGLING FORUMS An evening with Policy Lab on bass fisheries - a FREE Angling Trust Virtual Sea Angling Forum Join us online for the sixth of our recreational sea angling virtual forums in 2022. Our guests will be Policy Lab. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) will publish a new Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) for bass in early 2023. Defra would like this new FMP to be designed together with people from across the diverse range of interest groups in this space – this includes recreational sea anglers. They have therefore commissioned Policy Lab, who are experts in facilitating this kind of collective endeavour (known as ‘co-design’), to help in the creation of the new FMP. Please join the forum to hear more about the Bass FMP project and how you can get involved. You can register to attend the forum below: REGISTER FOR FORUM Catch up with the latest forums Mullet Fishing with the National Mullet Club The Angling Trust recently held another of its popular Virtual Sea Angling Forums where its guests were the National Mullet Club. More than 130 anglers registered to attend the event that discussed everything Mullet and was enthusiastically received with a typical example of feedback being, ‘Fantastic stuff, learnt a lot and looking forward to my first mullet!' The forum is now available to view FREE, as are all of our virtual forums at: https://anglingtrust.net/virtual-sea-angling-forum/ It proved such a popular event that we are now planning a Mullet Sea Fly Fishing virtual forum for later in the year. CATCH UP HERE Tope point of capture database launched Through a collaboration between Shark Hub UK and the Pat Smith Database, a tope point of capture database for charter boats and private boat owners has been launched. Sign up for the diary today Angling Trust Sea Angling Regional Voluntary Group (RVG) The group met recently with anglers represented from across England. We will soon be publishing details and biographies of our members, so keep an eye on the Angling Trust Sea webpages. Fisheries and Seafood Scheme The next round of the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS) funding has opened and we were able to report that the first phase of funding achieved has seen the deployment of pipes around the coastline for the Anglers National Line Recycling Service. The next round of funding has been opened and the Angling Trust is considering applications. All were reminded to check out the funding available via their clubs: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/fisheries-and-seafood-scheme-guidance Participation support to clubs The group were advised that the Angling Trust Participation Team are always keen to hear from clubs where they are considering holding events and that they may be able to offer regional assistance. With this there is the potential for some small funding costs being available. Angling Trust FREE Sea Newsletter The RVG agreed it will work to support the aim to increase the subscription and opening rate by 10% over the coming year of emails containing the Sea Newsletter reminding all anglers that subscription is FREE and that all they need to do to receive them is to subscribe at: https://anglingtrust.net/subscribe-to-newsletters/ Natural England and SSSI Group members were reminded of the ongoing meeting process between Natural England and the Angling Trust where issues relating to Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are discussed. These meeting came about as a direct result of concerns raised by RVG members about bait digging issues on the Isle of Sheppey, though these have now been resolved. Concerns were raised about potential issues developing on the Camel Estuary in Cornwall relating to bait digging. Do you know of any issues developing relating to bait digging? POST MEETING NOTE: Since this meeting the Angling Trust have met with Natural England who have agreed to investigate issues on the Camel Estuary. The group next meets in early July.
