Minimum legal size limbo as EU rule change drops recreational fishing

Earlier this month the Angling Trust discovered that a recent change to an EU regulation meant that the EU’s Minimum Conservation Reference Sizes (MCRS) -- the minimum size of fish species that can be sold commercially – do not automatically apply to recreational fishing. Some IFCAs have brought in emergency bylaws to correct the situation while others are assessing the situation. In the meantime we are encouraging all anglers to check with their local IFCA and to adhere to any local bylaws. Find out more

Do you fish for wrasse in the south of England? We want to know more ... plus chance to win £50 fishing voucher!

Vividly coloured, hard-fighting and easily catchable – it’s not hard to understand why wrasse are such a popular target for sea anglers in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. But how important are they?

The Angling Trust has been working with the University of Exeter to develop a short survey to help us understand more about the importance of wrasse to sea anglers. We also want to get a better idea of what you know about the commercial live wrasse fishery, which has sprung up over the last few years to supply cleaner fish to salmon farms in Scotland.

By completing the survey, you’ll enter a prize draw to win a £50 voucher for online tackle giant Fishing Megastore! Please take just a few minutes to help contribute to research that will influence the management of wrasse fisheries in the future. Take the survey here

Marine Regions survey hits the right buttons

Thank you to all our members who completed the Marine Regions survey. We received over 700 responses – an amazing response! Each and every one of which is being analysed and will help us to decide how best to support clubs and individual members through a network of sea angling regions across the country. More details of the survey results will follow.

Anglers to support bluefin tagging project

Success! Experienced anglers fishing from specially selected ‘support vessels’ will now be able to target bluefin tuna as part of the ThunnusUK bluefin tagging programme this year. The Angling Trust lobbied for anglers’ experience to contribute to the project and support vessels carrying anglers with experience of catching tuna will now be supporting the tagging vessel.

Click here for details on how to apply to get involved.

In addition, pressure from the Angling Trust has also helped expand the project from England into Wales and now Scotland with tags being provided for bluefin to be tagged in Scottish waters for the first time.

Wyvern Region's Junior competition getting children into sea fishing

Forty-two kids competed in this year’s Angling Trust Wyvern Marine Region junior match at Plymouth’s Mountbatten Breakwater. The Angling Trust is taking the lead in getting more kids into sea angling like this. Well done to Keaton Hore (pictured) who came first with a cracking 2lb 5oz ballan wrasse!

We're all increasingly aware of the amount of plastic and other packaging that is being used every day. But how much is entering our waterways? And how is this impacting on your fishing? The Angling Trust has launched a short survey to understand the scale of the litter problem in fresh and marine waters and explore what can be done to help. Take part in survey

Species of the month: Blue Shark

w660_1171083_bluesharkaugust2019x600px.j

Blue sharks are summer visitors to the coasts of south west England and Wales. These sleek predators get their name from their metallic blue colour and can grow to over 200lb. Virtually all  fish caught by anglers are returned. They are unpleasant to eat but are caught in huge number commercially by longline fisheries in the Bay of Biscay where their fins are sold to the far east. The Angling Trust is working with the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain on a number of shark fishing issues and David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, likes to practice what he preaches and caught his first (and one of the smallest!) blue shark fishing from Cornwall this month.

The Angling Trust is the united national representative body for all angling in England and Wales. It is united in a collaborative relationship with Fish Legal, a separate membership association that uses the law to protect fish stocks and the rights of its members throughout the UK. Joint membership packages with Fish Legal are available for individuals, clubs, fisheries, riparian owners and other categories. Please find out more.
