 | A day on Sea Sparkle |
 | At the beginning of the school holidays I promised to take Thomas, my 9 yr old grandson fishing. Well time flies and last Sunday he reminded me that it was back to school on Friday. He's fished on the beach with me several times and caught Wrasse, he also caught the first ever fish aboard MegaByte, an under size bass, but he's never caught something he could eat, so that was the challenge. The problem was I didn't feel I could take him out on MegaByte on my own, as I wouldn't be able to give him 100% attention. As luck would have it Derek (Sea Sparkle) came to the rescue, he wanted to go out on Thursday but didn't have crew, when I told Thomas we were going fishing on Derek's boat his reply was, "that's good, he catches fish on his". Thomas and I met Derek in the car park at Parkstone Bay Marina as we put everything on board the chap turned up to launch us. By the time we walked to the pontoon the boat was being lowered in, we took the lines and within minutes were underway (what a convenient way to go boating). As soon as we reached the North Channel, Derek let Thomas take the wheel and under Derek's supervision he took us out as far as Sandbanks, where Derek took over and we headed to "Derek's Mackerel Mark". It wasn't long before Thomas had his first Mackerel, ending up with about 14. It was then back into the harbour to "Derek's Plaice Mark", we picked up a buoy and all three of us started fishing, Derek said, "we won't get anything until about 12:45", at about 12:50 Thomas's rod started to twitch, five minutes later he landed his first Plaice. That was it for the rest of the day, Derek and I were outfished by a 9 year old. We were back in the marina, boat out, unloaded and cleaned by 15:00. Then home to cook the plaice for Thomas' tea. A very successfull day, to quote The 'A' Team, "I like it when a plan comes together". Thanks again Derek

 | Joint Venture's Open Comp |
 | Thanks again to Rob and the team for organising Sun's Open comp. The crew on JV thoroughly enjoyed it.
We had a busy day. I had Ben onboard replacing Bob at last minute, and it was a joy to have him on - just one of those guys who knows what to do when - picking up the anchor line when buoying it off - tidying up rods and tackle, cutting bait etc.
This was made all the more helpful as we have Dave Barham and Jim from BFM onboard so the pressure was on me as a skipper to find some fish. I'm pleased to say it was one of those days where the plans worked!
First mark was well inshore of the other boats and I noted the looks on the guys faces which seemed to say 'here? really? were only just off the beach!' We should get small eyes and spotted ray here I said.... 30 seconds later ben lands a ray! we had another couple before it went quiet.... Plan B...
.... as the tide dropped we went out into the wind to where I had the pair of 30lb blondes from last year... we should get blonde rays here... and guess what - we did! Dave hooked a real beast of a fish - but on 12lb gear and a hard running tide he broke off trying to move it off the bottom. After an hour or so the anchor tripped so I took the que to roll out plan C for an Undulate - and guess what? 30 mins later I landed a 12lb fish that got me 12th place.
We finished the day with a few bass which also played ball. The guys got plenty of photos for the mag, where kept fed and watered wioth copious teas and bacon rols and the fish obliged for a change!
Look forward to 2011! |

 | What a great day to be out on the water, flat seas no wind and sunshine!
Out on Just Perfick with a mate of mine who had never fished in saltwater before so even catching the bait was fun for him. it was one of those days where i could stand on the bow and flyfish so i did, while Tomo and my mate alan , freelined live mackeral. I caught a couple of small pollack on the fly and dropped a Bass at the boat on a shad.
Tomo had a screaming run that was very impressive, it took him round the back of the boat before dropping the bait, it could only have been a very big Bass. While retreiving in, another Bass picked it up and Tomo landed a 4lber. My mate Alan then landed a 4lber which completely made his day.
Thanks Tomo for a great day on the water

 | Having missed out on last years trip I made this years The weather was great we were out every day we trailed five boats up. the fishing was to say the least poor over six days only three skate were cought 209 lb 196 194 A few years ago we would have had this amount on every boat in a day. even the doggy's were short on the ground a few congers up to 25lb were cought but it was one of the most dire years that anybody can remember. even the maccys were short on the groud you had to seek them out. a disapointing week fish wise but a good time was had. I would advise anybody coming up from the south to look on the wsf site to see if the fishing has improved any. |

 | Awols Weymouth experience |
 | Having had a new windscreen fitted on Friday am we were a little later leaving than the rest of the pack. With the weather being perfect for travelling and others bait fishing we made good time so soon caught everyone else up.
We decided to go straight to the shambles and take our chances on the bait front. We soon got some bait although it was decidedly hard work with both mackerel and launce coming aboard sporadically. First proper drop and Dean was into a turbot of around 4lb. Then...........................nothing. We decided to try Portland race to try for bass. It was a tad lumpy in there and with just one small bass being caught for our efforts. Soon gave up and opted for a last drift on the bank but without any luck. A quick run into Portland harbour wash and brush up then walk into town? for a very nice curry.
Up on Saturday just in time to see Alfresco leave port to plunder those offshore wrecks. We along with most others decided to have a late start so after breakfast and a lot of fiddling about we left for another day on the banks. As there was enough bait left on ice from Friday we started fishing straight away. First drop and Dean is into a small Brill that was about sizable but went back to fight another day. Very slow today with Dean catching a gurnard and a couple of Weavers and that was it. Dean fished as hard as ever I have seen him fish but all to no avail and I blanked, not a blooming fish but still enjoyed the day. The evening gathering at “The Boat that Rocks” restaurant was superb, great food great company and loads of wine made it an evening to remember.
Sunday arrives with our plan being to go 19 miles offshore to some wrecks and hop our way home. The weather was not having any of that with around 3 metre swells and a freshening wind it was decided to go across Weymouth bay and try fishing at dancing ledge however after several chats on the radio to others that were further ahead the decision was made to go to the south west banks. Got there just as the tide was starting to ebb. Hook in baits down but after about 45 mins the hook let go and we were adrift. With the wind now against the strong tide we gave up and cruised back to Poole for an early bath. To sum up the week end was brilliant. It’s not just about how much or little was caught that make a trip like this it is the whole experience of cruising in company. I think everyone enjoyed themselves and I would like to thank Charlie for organising both the marina berths and the restaurant.
Where are we going to next
