Welcome to Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club, Poole's only club dedicated to small boat angling.
For a membership form click here>
We are a small club established to promote safety at sea and small boat angling. We have in excess of 150 members with over 90 boats. Members keep their boats on trailers, swinging moorings and pontoon berths. Boat sizes range from small outboard driven dinghies up to a maximum length of 35'. The club aims to cater for the needs of sea anglers fishing from small boats within Club waters that extend from St Catherine's Point in the East to Portland Bill in the West.

We hold regular club meetings, competitions, social events and an annual open boat competition usually held during November. Club meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at the Parkstone Trades and Labour Club Ashley Road, Parkstone, Poole, Dorset. For map see link here

We also organise for our members occasional courses. Some courses recently attended by our members are RYA Powerboat level 2, RYA first aid, sea survival and VHF.
As well as formal courses there is a great wealth of information (both boating and fishing) waiting to be gleaned from other members.

An initial joining fee of £15 is payable with Membership of the Club currently costs just £15 per club year or £20 per club year for a family membership

If you feel that this club could be useful to you please contact martin.burt1@ntlworld.com an information pack will be emailed back to you

Part 1, The Ledge.

Began at Southbourne 06:00 Sat’, the sea oily flat, overcast with very light to calm wind. Met KayakKarma and friend, quick feathering stint then off to the west side of the Ledge to meet Richie, Tratty & Lozz who’d launched from Mudeford Quay. Arrived at the Long Groyne to see the lads approx. 1.5 miles out. Called Richie up on Ch12. didn’t sound very happy , loads of doggies caught. Paddled out to my mark, about 200 yards short of Richie & Lozz, Tratty was further over to the east.

Richie was right:

After No.10 the novelty was gone, moved buoy to another closer to shallower water over the Ledge, more of the same. The WAFI’s (wind assisted flippin’ idiots) were out in force, looked over my shoulder to see a ruddy great armada of various Yachts approaching. Lozz was pleased, went right past him. Richie came up on the VHF, he and Lozz were moving, Lozz was on 33 dogfish and a they’d a small Bream each. Watched as they head further out towards the group of boats at the end of the Ledge. Tide was beginning to run-up, headed onto the Ledge. First drop on the new buoy and a Wrasse of a 2lb, no Dogs though. Another Wrasse and moved back to deeper water. No Dogs, & no bites. Phoned KKK, to find him having taken an early bath, off the water at 09:30, didn’t do too badly though, 2lb Plaice & a 2lb Bream. After an hour, a few Bream bites and picked up small female, then a better fish, which unfortunately gutted the hook, 13/4lb. Tratty appeared and paddled over, tide was running hard so he’d come back into quieter waters. Shortly after Richie & Lozz returned, Richie headed in with Tratty while I fished on with Lozz. Bites had dried up for me but Lozz was knocking out the Bream barely 30 yards away. Winding in for umpteenth time and bang, mid water take, must be a big Mackerel, no, a reasonable Pollock, retained for tea.

We both decided to call it a day, Lozz heading off towards Mudeford while I headed against the weakening tide back to Southbourne. Lozz & Richie were heading out again later for Conger. Another 6 miles paddled and a Bream & Pollock for tea.

Down to the Quay at 19:00 to see Richie & Lozz off on their evening Conger campaign: (video)

Part 2, Kimmeridge

Sunday and it was off to Kimmeridge, a none too promising start, Police everywhere in Poole, saw Richie & Lozz on the opposite side of the bypass heading east ? Soon discovered the westbound carriageway of the Upton Bypass closed. Bit of a diversion and arrived at Kim’ to find no Richie or Lozz. Set-up, hung about, finally on the water and paddled the mile out, still no sign of the lads. Force 4 offshore wasn’t nice, buoyed off and Richie on the VHF, they’d launched. Caught a solitary Mackerel on mini hokkai as they arrived. I was well short of the boats over Broad Bench, mainly due to the tide and wind, didn’t want to commit an anchor yet. Richie & Lozz headed on out, the sea breeze was beginning to cancel the offshore wind, headed further out to my preferred mark, discovering a nicely placed buoy.

Tide strong, 6ozs to hold bottom in 50ft. When I discovered that Squid tipped mini hokkai were the killer bait, the Bream came thick and fast.

user posted image

The other twin paternoster did not attract a bite, yet the hokkai were hit immediately, on every drop, stripped in an instant or a fish on in seconds. Gave up counting when double figures were passed, all super fish 1-1/2 to 2-1/2lb bracket, mainly the darker male fish. Hooked a huge female, a good 3lb. All bar one male fish returned. Terrific sport.

user posted image

The sport continued up the tide, not so much as a sniff on the other rod, very odd! Richie was on the VHF again, Lozz was in the thick of it too with loads of Bream. They both paddled over as the tide eased. We ambled over to the Kimmeridge Ledges, plugging as we went. Richie anchored up for a break. Nearly ran over Lozz’s plug, only to notice that he was dragging a half dead Pollock, which promptly fell off as he wound in.

What a day, what a weekend! Drifted slowly for a while, relaxing and taking in the scenery, then headed in for 16:30

Sat 10th May, a new species for me
Replies: 0
Despite my rubbish track record at finding marks and catching fish Rich Stephens offered to crew for me on Saturday and we made a relatively leisurely start leaving Cobbs Quay for the 9:30 bridge lift. We had time for a brief chat with the crew of Frisky Fox while holding for the bridge and had a bit of inspiration passed across as well. Good to see you out on the water Mike.

We didn't have a specific plan, other than to avoid the crowds (as much as possible on a fine Saturday) and try a couple of closer marks first before going further afield if necessary. A couple of early drifts for mackerel drew a blank so for bait we decided to fall back on the squid, rag and "mature" mackie that Rich had brought along. In addition I had a pack of prawns salvaged from the domestic "past sell-by-date" stock.

A couple of drifts across our first chosen mark provided some action so as the tide turned we anchored for the mark intending to have a quiet lunch until the flow picked up. This was not to be and lunch was interspersed with a busy three hours or so of fishing activity - quite a novelty for me smile.gif We were each using a light weight rod and a medium weight rod, in my case 6-12lb and 12-20lb Shimano Speedmasters. We had our own variants of basic rigs, with Rich using significantly shorter traces than me. We had a a good take of Bream (20+) with Rich catching more frequently on the shorter rigs but my longer rigs catching the larger fish but less frequently - bit of a lesson in that for us wink.gif . Rich switched across to the mackerel bait and was "rewarded" by a few Dogfish. I also managed to land a large rock (stone variety) of a few pounds which was well hooked blink.gif .

I thought I had snagged another large rock when the 12-20lb rod took on a serious bend and stayed well bent during the retrieve, however, after a bit of effort I was rewarded with a new species catch for me, a Thornback ray of 10lb 12oz biggrin.gif .

All fish were returned other than a couple of larger Bream each for the table. BTW, not another boat on the mark with us all day, so we managed to avoid the crowds as well. Not a bad days fishing and good company as well. Thanks for crewing Rich.

Poor pose by me with new species/PB.

Sunday trying to to avoid the car park
Replies: 0
We arrived at the marina at 8.45 Sunday finding an exceptionally low neap tide. weep.gif we eventualy crept out at 10.30 and found ourselves in an an armada of boats heading out through the entrance to give their Gin palaces a first taste of spring sunshine. Bream are lovely but the option of the car park or the swash and the constant traffic decided us to head for somewhere in between. Good decision biggrin.gif We started our 2nd drift and my pal had a nice 1lb plaice . Next drift my rod held down and I thought I'd snagged bottom. I started to reel in and felt a nodding pull, next!! my light spinning rod was bent double. After a few minutes tussle my pal netted a lovely 4.5 Turbot. laugh.gif Minutes later on the next drift my mate pulled another nice plaice in. Today with its perfect conditions makes me realise why I keep doing it. Terry

 First trip of the year
Replies: 0
Took Frisky Fox out both Saturday and Sunday for our first two trips of the year, and had a small tour of local marks, spotting several club boats on our travels.

Ignored the obvious hotspots for a while, and fished a few personal favourites (without a boat for over a mile), to see how they were doing without us.

No one spot seemed to excel, but tried a mixture of baits, rough, smooth, deep, shallow, and mixed it all up.

Not too bad a haul of species:
Doggies in up to 130' of water!
Black bream (didn't fish the Bream comp, but Carol's was best at 2lb 4oz today)
Mackerel (enough for bait and dinner)
Garfish (George's dinner)
Pollack - while bream bashing (Carol's favourite)
Small-eyed ray (target species for Carol)
Whiting (bit late?)
Poor cod

We all had fun, and slow and steady action both days.

Oh, and one of the bream was sporting war wounds! A 2lb 2oz male with teeth marks round its middle, with a bite radius consistent with a tope! Think it must have been grabbed on the way in (slack line in mid-retrieve?), as the injuries were very fresh, many scales ripped out etc, and no signs of new ones.

 Where to go
Replies: 9
Bought a Shetland black Marlin just before Christmas, have been out several times
this year and caught b@gg@r all. I don't mind so much but my 80 year old dad who had a strokelast year, for some unknown reason does, I didn't know he knew so many swear words. If I came out with half the stuff he does I would have had a slap round the head and my mouth washed out with soap.
I must be going to the wrong places, using the wrong bait, and perhaps the wrong tackle, can anyone out there give me a hand and let me know the secrets of where to go. Any help will be gratefully received, so I can at least shut him up for a while or blame someone else for going to the wrong place.
The boat is based at Cobbs Quay, and only does about 8 knots with a following tide.
Many thanks

 Solent again
Replies: 5
After getting my bloody mother pestering me to take her out, i finally agreed this morning, so i took her to of keyhaven and fished the calm water inside hurst spit, well away from the rough stuff.

A short session it was, only dropping down the hook at 7.30pm, and like last time, i opted for light gear, and only the single rod, this time fished in 36ft instead of 50 plus feet where the fish were the other day.

Anyway, to cut the story short, we were straight into fish, and the tips didn't stop rattling. Rag was suprisingly poor, but small squid chunks got bites straight away.

With Hounds the target, they came out to play straight away, but there was also rays, pout and dogs thrown in.

No big fish, but hectic action.

 Reminder

A gentle reminder .....

If you want your fish / catch reports to be entered for the Fish of the Month or Biggest / Best etc. then the MUST either be entered using the catch reports form on the website or phoned through to me.

Including details in a general catch report is not sufficient as I have not the time to trawl through all the reports.

Only 3 fish recorded so far this month ....

 Monday 5th, on the patch
Replies: 18
I took my son out for his first fishing trip of the year (mine as well for this season!)

Went out about midday, after the early rain had passed - towards the patches - expecting to see loads of boats.
I wasnt disappointed - there must have been 30+ boats - sitting out there!!

We opted for the outer patch, and had this to ourselves, and found a nice looking spot in about 14m. Soon as the rods were down, we had plucks on the rod tips, and then one screeming reel resulting in this rather nice 3lb Bream, ably hauled in by junior, and netted by yours truly. we had a few more bream then called time and had a few drifts over by old harry which produced the first mackerel of the season for us, and headed in.

Pity we couldnt have stayed out longer, but had a good day and Alex got his bream at last!
Managed to miss the tide for the mooring, which resulted in an enforced stay in the marina and a wonderful fish and chip supper afloat.
A great end to the weekend!
Paul
